TBR View: Rangers should reignite reported interest in John Lundstram

With Rangers starting the season in great fashion, the club should look at strengthening in the January transfer window if the opportunities arise for them as they have a chance of achieving something special.

Steven Gerrard’s side sit six points clear at the top of the Scottish Premiership after 12 league games, plus they are in the Europa League group stages and started with a win against Standard Liege last week.

The Gers have a talented squad at their disposal and do have strength in the centre of the park, but there may be a chance for them to sign a previous target if they wish.

According to the Sheffield Star in August, Rangers were looking at Sheffield United’s John Lundstram as a transfer target and he was a name linked with them during the summer window.

The 26-year-old remained with the Premier League club beyond the transfer window and he’s started every top-flight game for Chris Wilder’s side this season.

But Sky Sports now claims that Sheffield United will consider offers for the midfielder when the January window opens, as his discussions over a new long-term contract at Bramall Lane have broken down.

Lundstram, whose Sheffield United contract expires at the end of the season, looks like he could be on the move in a couple of months time and is someone that should be in-demand given his consistent performances in a Sheffield United shirt.

The all-action Englishman is a central midfielder that was a major success in the Premier League last season with the Blades due to his combative approach, plus he was an attacking threat with five goals and three assists.

He would be ideal competition for the likes of Glen Kamara, Ryan Jack and Scott Anfield in the centre of the park at Ibrox, which is why Rangers should look at trying to sign him in January if they can raise the funds.

Lundstarm would surely be available at a cut-price fee with his contract winding down and he’s got the quality to be a big hit in Scottish football.
