TBR View: Pep Guardiola reuniting with Sergi Roberto is the versatile signing Manchester City need to make
The season is officially over for Manchester City, and transfers are now on the agenda for the Premier League champions.
Pep Guardiola will have a lot to sort out over the transfer window. Mainly, who will be the heir to Sergio Aguero at the club following the Argentine’s departure.
However, there are also other areas of the squad that could do with improvements.
Improving on a title-winning squad
The left-back area will likely once again see some heavy investment, with Benjamin Mendy and Oleksandr Zinchenko not convincing in the position. Indeed, general squad depth could be signed to bolster the team.
This is possibly where rumours linking FC Barcelona star Sergi Roberto to Manchester City have come from.
According to Sport via Sport Witness, the Premier League champions have reached out to the La Liga giants over a potential transfer. Coincidentally, the 29-year-old fullback has just one year remaining on his current deal.
Roberto at Manchester City offers versatility for Guardiola
Guardiola handed Roberto his debut for Barcelona back in 2011, an opportunity the Spanish international has said he is ‘grateful’ towards the City manager via Stadium Astro.
Although primarily now a right-back, Roberto has found success with Barcelona playing in a number of positions. Furthermore, this season alone has seen the Catalan-born star has played three different roles under Ronald Koeman.Embed from Getty Images
And it is this versatility that could make Roberto, who reportedly earns £176,000-a-week according to Salary Sport, an outstanding new addition to Manchester City.
A player reaching his peak
Indeed, with Roberto turning 29 this year, the Barcelona star is reaching the prime of his career. Therefore, this would be crucial if the defender was to join City this summer.Embed from Getty Images
A player of Roberto’s versatility, age and quality could be massive for Guardiola next season. And after last week’s defeat to Chelsea in the final, the City boss will likely want to pull all the stops to claim European glory.
Roberto’s contract situation could make the Barcelona star a realistic signing this summer. Moreover, with Guardiola already familiar with the 29-year-old, City should be keen to sign the defender for next season.
