Newcastle United could be set for a busy January and have already been offered striker, Nikola Kalinic, according to reports.
The Daily Mail claimed yesterday that the former Blackburn Rovers man was being offered to the Magpies.
The 31-year-old is currently in Serie A with Roma. However, he’s yet to find the back of the net this season and looks to be struggling for form once more.
Kalinic is already well-known in England thanks to his failed spell with Blackburn. During his time at Ewood Park, he managed only seven Premier League goals across two seasons.
Newcastle should stay clear
Magpies manager Steve Bruce will, admittedly, want to add some more goals to his team. He’ll want to ensure they stay well clear of being sucked into any relegation fight in the second half of the campaign.
But signing someone like Kalinic is not necessarily going to be the answer.
Goals have hardly flowed for the Croatian since he left Blackburn. Indeed, his best goalscoring return was during the 16/17 season with Fiorentina, where he notched 15 league goals.
That was four years ago now though. Since then, he has struggled once more for form. A paltry two goals in 17 appearances for Atletico Madrid last season highlighted his recent struggles.
At 31, Newcastle would surely be better putting their money in a younger talent or at least someone who is proven to know where the back of the net is in England.
Alternatives out there
Not that we are trying to pick who Newcastle should sign, but there will be better alternatives available than Nikola Kalinic.
Newcastle need someone who can hit the ground running. Yes, Kalinic might feel he has a point to prove in the Premier League but he’s been gone a while now. Surely he isn’t that interested in trying to prove a point in England?
Steve Bruce will no doubt have a list of targets. Newcastle fans better hope, in our opinion, that he has other players in mind away from Nikola Kalinic.
