Newcastle are in desperate need of a striker this month. They have been linked with several names since the window opened and one of those is Karl Toko Ekambi. Here is why Steve Bruce should do everything in his power to bring the Villarreal striker to St James’ Park this month.
The Magpies have scored just 21 Premier League goals this season and summer signing Joelinton has struggled to find form. Despite scoring his first goal since October on Tuesday against Rochdale, the worries remain about his suitability as a goalscorer.
Toko Ekambi, on the other hand, is having a strong season in Spain and is gaining a name for himself as a striker to be reckoned with. He has scored six goals in 11 league starts and has also provided two assists in the process.
Mike Ashley will be hesitant to sign another striker after splashing out £40 million on Joelinton in the summer. However, Le10 Sport has reported that Villareal are reportedly only demanding £21 million for Toko Ekambi, almost half of what the Magpies paid for the Brazilian.
It could prove to be a risk worth taking for Newcastle. Despite being sat 13th in the Premier League, they are just five points clear of the relegation places. Goals have been the big problem for the club this season and they will need to score more in the latter stages of the season if they are to secure survival.
Ekambi is a powerful striker whose finishing, aerial threat and ability to drive with the ball would make him a nightmare for Premier League defenders.
