TBR View: Newcastle have got to consider Kieran Trippier amid reports

Newcastle United’s soon-to-be owners are likely to be tasked with a number of pressing concerns in the transfer market when they finally announce a takeover – and a new right-back should be high on their shortlist.

Matty Longstaff’s current contract is likely to be a priority, as is a new talismanic striker. Joelinton has failed in his first season at Newcastle following a club-record move from Hoffenheim, netting only one Premier League goal for the Toon.

But a right-back may emerge as just as important. That is because The Toon may find they could soon run out of options on the right side of defence – despite currently boasting three senior players that are considered right-sided defenders.

Javi Manquillo, though, is about to see his contract expire this summer – and it looks as though the new owners may see him depart, despite remaining first choice at times this season. Reports from America suggest DeAndre Yedlin could depart.

That leaves last summer signing Emil Krafth, but the Sweden international has struggled since his move to Tyneside. A new right-back, then, is likely to be targeted and Atletico Madrid set-piece specialist Kieran Trippier is perfect.

The Sun have claimed in an exclusive that Atletico are willing to sell England international Trippier, 29, for a fee of £20million – just one season after he left Tottenham to move to Diego Simeone’s side, where he has since played 26 times.

Renowned for his free-kick in a World Cup semi-final against Croatia, Trippier is excellent going forward and just as defensively solid. But with an enormous 107 appearances in the Premier League and a big-name calibre, he would be perfect for Newcastle.

Newcastle’s new owners would not only solve their emerging right-back issue with the signing of Trippier, but they would instantly bring a big name to the club and one that can score from free-kicks. At £20million, he would be a bargain.
