Leeds United are being linked with a shock move for soon-to-be free agent Claudio Bravo this summer with the Manchester City goalkeeper in the final months of his current contract – and a Marcelo Bielsa reunion could just bring the best out of him.
Chilean outlet En Cancha have claimed that 36-year-old Bravo is weighing up his options as he enters the final few months of his contract at The Etihad. He has played 58 times for City over the last four seasons since his move from Barcelona.
However, the signing of Ederson has seen him become back-up – and subsequently, errors have come into his game due to a lack of regular game time. The 121-time Chile star is now set to leave Manchester City.
The report claims the Chinese Super League, a return to Spain or Mexico as options – as well as Bielsa and Leeds. Bravo and Bielsa worked together at Chile for four years between 2007 and 2011, when Bielsa managed the Chile national team.
With Bravo struggling for form, he might be looking for a place where he can play regularly to enjoy the final few years of his career. At Elland Road, he would surely be first choice, as Kiko Casilla’s performances continue to come under scrutiny.
An expensive risk, Bravo earns £80,000 a week at Manchester City – and given that he would be a free agent, would require a signifcant signing-on fee. But a reunion with Bielsa might just bring the best out of Bravo.
During his time under Bielsa at international level, Bravo was just beginning to make a name for himself after helping Real Sociedad gain promotion to La Liga. Bielsa’s teachings had seen Bravo become renowned as a ball-playing goalkeeper.
Just three years after Bielsa left his post as Chile manager in 2011, Bravo joined Barcelona. Bielsa got the best out of Bravo, and a reunion at club level might just do the same in his final swansong – at Elland Road.
