Kristoffer Ajer’s agent has confirmed that the defender will not sign a new contract at Celtic and will leave the Scottish champions at the end of the season – and Liverpol have got to take action, following John Arne Riise’s recent praise.
Ajer, 21, has already clocked up 129 senior appearances for the Scottish champions, making himself one of the first names on the teamsheet for Neil Lennon’s side, despite his young age. Indeed, his performances have made him a favourite.
But his agent’s comments will surely change that. Still a blossoming Celtic player, there is some way before becoming the finished article but Ajer’s ambition seems to have been chosen ahead of regular game time.
His agent told The Scottish Sun: “He will not extend his contract with Celtic and will leave this summer. There are several clubs who are interested, but I can’t go into their names. There are many who have followed him for a long period.”
Liverpool currently boast four options at centre-back but Dejan Lovren is more than likely to leave in the summer, after struggling in recent outings. He will enter the final 12 months of his current deal at the end of the season.
Ajer could become an option, and if Liverpool do become interested in the attacker then surely they will take Liverpool icon Riise’s comments into account – with the Norwegian comparing Ajer to that of Reds legend Jamie Carragher.
“He’s quite big and people think he’s slow because of that but he’s quicker than you think and he’s a proper defender – a bit like Jamie Carragher,” Riise told The Herald in December. “He’s a good player but he’s going to be even better.”
If Liverpool are on the lookout for a new central defender in the summer, then surely Ajer would be the perfect signing given he is young but experienced, his agent has confirmed he wants to leave – and that Riise believes he is like Carragher.
