Despite the fact he’s been on the fringes of the Leeds United squad so far this season, the club should take a rain check on the future of Barry Douglas amid reported interest in him.

The left-footed defender played in the Carabao Cup defeat to Hull City, but has failed to make the matchday squad in any of the Premier League games and appears to have slipped down the pecking order at Elland Road.

According to a report from The Sun on Sunday (11 October, page 61), Championship side Watford have made an offer to try sign the 31-year-old on loan, plus there is interest from Blackburn Rovers.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side should take a rain check on Douglas’ future though, as they may need him in the next couple of weeks in the squad.

Leeds have confirmed on their official website that centre-back duo Liam Cooper and Diego Llorente have both returned from international duty early with groin injuries.

Whites captain Cooper could be unavailable for the next two weeks, while teammate Llorente may be unavailable for three weeks.

With Leeds now missing two senior centre-backs for imminent fixtures, it could see first-choice left-back Stuart Dallas drop into the centre of defence and it wouldn’t be the first time he’s covered that position.

His move across the defence would leave the door open in the full-back position, which could give Douglas the opportunity to compete with youngster Leif Davis for the starting role and the more experienced man may be seen a safer option for Argentine boss Bielsa.

Douglas may not have a long-term future with Leeds and he’s entered the final year of his contract with the Yorkshire giants, but the Scotsman was a consistent performer in the Championship that knows the system and may be required due to injuries.
