TBR View: Ki-Jana Hoever may have got Liverpool chance amid Virgil van Dijk injury woe

Liverpool picked up a hard-fought win against Sheffield United in the Premier League yesterday. New signing Diogo Jota headed home the crucial winner and there is no doubt that Liverpool’s business with Wolves has seen them bring in a top option in attack.

However, could it be the other piece of transfer activity involving the two clubs this summer might now look premature?

Liverpool also sold Wolves a player, with Dutch talent Ki-Jana Hoever heading to Molineux in a deal that could eventually be worth around £13.5 million, as reported by the Liverpool Echo.

The versatile defender, capable at right-back and centre-back, had been compared to countryman Virgil van Dijk because of his excellent displays in the Liverpool under-23s but the Reds decided it was best to cash in on the player this summer when this deal came to the fore.

However, it is now apparent that Hoever might have been a valuable member of the Liverpool first-team had the club decided to keep him.

Van Dijk has suffered a potentially season-ending injury and Joel Matip and Joe Gomez both remain extremely injury prone. Fabinho is doing an admirable stand-in job but an extra defensive option would undoubtedly be a big help to Liverpool for the rest of the season.

Hoever might have been presented with a chance to play regularly at Anfield with an injury to his fellow Dutchman but Liverpool had to make a tough choice and let him go.

It is unlikely a decision that Liverpool will regret, but it is certainly a shame that this current misfortune did not ultimately present Hoever with his chance to shine at Anfield.
