Paulo Fonseca is in pole position to take on the vacant Tottenham job and when he gets to work he has plenty to do.

Spurs finished seventh during 2020/21 and were forced to settle for a place in the European Conference League.

Plenty of Tottenham players didn’t cut the mustard last season and Fonseca will need players.

There will be reinforcements required across the park. One man who could improve Tottenham considerably is a man the incoming boss knows well.

Lorenzo Pellegrini will be a wanted man this summer. Liverpool and Barcelona are already keen, whilst Tottenham have been loosely linked too.

La Repubblica claims that if Fonseca is appointed, he will return to Roma to try and persuade the Italian to join him.

The 24-year-old has the potential to be a game-changing signing for Spurs.

During 2020/21, he scored 11 goals and registered nine assists from his 47 appearances for the club.

He helped Roma to the semi-final of the Europa League and was often trusted as the captain of the side.

Signing Pellegrini might not be overly tricky either. It is claimed that he has a release clause of just £27 million – a price that is more than affordable to Spurs.

Pellegrini to Tottenham: Is a star in the making?

The versatile midfielder has typically played in two positions for Roma.

He has operated as a No.10 on 24 occasions during 2020/21 and as a central midfielder 18 times.

Pellegrini weighs in with goals and is also capable of registering assists.

Fonseca clearly knows how to get the very best out of him and he could thrive in the Premier League.

Tottenham weren’t blessed with lots of goals from their midfielders during 2020/21. That in itself provides the incoming boss with a conundrum.

With that in mind, activating Pellegrini’s release clause looks like a no-brainer for Spurs and if appointed, Fonseca must act.
