Everton are being linked with a move for Norwich City star, Todd Cantwell, this weekend.
The Toffees are reportedly keen on landing Cantwell. The Sun on Sunday (print edition, Sunday 5th Jan 2020), claims that both Everton and West Ham want the youngster.
Cantwell has been in fine form this season for the Canaries, despite their overall struggles. He’s fired in an impressive six Premier League goals already. Indeed, those performances have caught the eye of onlooking clubs it seems, with a whole host of clubs keeping a watch over Cantwell.
But if Everton do decide to press ahead with their efforts, it could well mean the end for one of their current crop.
Icelandic midfielder, Gylfi Sigurdsson, has failed to live up to expectations since he became the Toffees’ record buy.
Despite the clear ability that Sigurdsson has in his locker, he’s managed only one goal this season. This is all the more surprising given last season he scored 13 times.
New kid on the block
If Everton does sign Todd Cantwell then it’s hard to see how Ancelotti would fit both he and Sigurdsson into his starting XI.
Cantwell will surely not move to just sit on the bench. Given his attacking tendencies and ability to make runs from deep, the Norwich man would occupy some of the space Sigurdsson likes to work in.
There is, of course, ways around it. Sigurdsson could well drop deeper, as he has done so already at times this season.
But at 30-years-old and with a budding 21-year coming into the club, it could be the beginning of the end for the former Swansea City man.
Todd Cantwell is a top player already. He’s only going to improve, too. If Everton do pursue a move for him, then Sigurdsson needs to look over his shoulder.
