Arsenal have long been linked with a move for Juventus defender Daniele Rugani and were reportedly interested in the summer again – but they may now boast the all-important trump card to finally get a deal done.
Rugani, 25, has been linked with Arsenal on numerous occasions in the past few seasons – The Sun most recently reporting that the Gunners were looking at the Italy international as he remains on the fringes of the Juve squad.
However, Rugani has remained at Juventus but has managed just two appearances for the Old Lady this season. Indeed, the likes of Matthijs de Ligt, Merih Demiral, Giorgio Chiellini and Leonardo Bonucci are preferred.
The Gunners could still be keen and need a centre-back – Shkodran Mustafi, David Luiz and Sokratis are all in the final years of their contracts. But it could be the latter that finally hands Arsenal all the tools needed to sign Rugani.
Italian website CalcioMercato have claimed that Juventus have drawn up a January shortlist and ostracised Arsenal defender Sokratis is on that list. The 32-year-old has not been included in Arsenal’s 25-man Premier League squad.
The Gunners will be desperate to offload him for a fee in January, given it seems they are already playing without him. A cut-price move to Juve could happen in January given his contract situation.
But could Arsenal use Juventus’ interest in the former Borussia Dortmund star to finally nab themselves Rugani? The Times claim he is rated in the region of £30million – but including Sokratis might smooth over a move.
Juve have been reluctant to let Rugani go in the past. But including Sokratis would see them instantly replace the loss of Rugani with a player that they were keen on signing. It would also see them bring in a heap load of cash.
For the Gunners, they will add a leader at centre-back who has more than 100 appearances for Juve. It is a solution that suits all parties involved.
