TBR View: Defeat yesterday shows Leeds United have to act in January

Leeds United slipped to defeat yesterday against Sheffield Wednesday, highlighting the need once again for the club to strengthen in January.

The recall of Eddie Nketiah and Jack Clarke has left the Leeds squad looking somewhat thin on the ground.

Yesterday’s loss to the Owls only highlighted the lack of depth, especially in attacking areas. Patrick Bamford cut a forlorn figure at the top of the pitch. It was a game, in all honesty, that would have been ideal for Nketiah to enter.

However, the Whites have to deal with what they have for now. But it means that the next few weeks are going to be crucial for the Elland Road outfit.

Memories of last season

The notion of ‘Leeds are falling apart’ is one sung by many away fans around the country. There is, sadly for Leeds fans, an element of truth to that singalong.

Last season Leeds were ten points clear of third at one point. But a capitulation in the second half of the season saw Sheffield United catch-up and, ultimately, pip them to second.

While the Blades added the likes of Kieran Dowell, Gary Madine, and Scott Hogan in January, Leeds seemed to stand still and stick with their hand.

That simply cannot happen this time. Marcelo Bielsa has to act and quickly.

Strikers needed

Leeds have been linked with a number of players already this window. The likes of Billy Sharp have got a mention, while Cauley Woodrow is another name being mentioned.

Both of those players know where the back of the net is. Sharp, in particular, could be a fine addition if they can convince the Blades to part ways with their skipper.

We saw yesterday with Bamford struggling where the issue lies for Leeds. Promotion is, still, very much in their own hands.

The Whites fans, then, will be hoping the club acts and ensures a repeat of the 2018/19 season is not on the cards.
