TBR View: Daniele Rugani, not Nathan Ake, is the defender Arsenal need

Arsenal are looking to strengthen their ranks this January with Daniele Rugani one of the names being linked with a move to the club.

The Juventus star is a wanted man. According to reports from the Sun, Leicester City are also keen on landing the Italian. The 25-year-old has produced some fine performances for Juve in the last few seasons.

And with Mikel Arteta keen on adding to his defence, Rugani could well be the ideal man to step into the fold.

The Gunners have also been linked with a move for Nathan Ake. The Bournemouth star has been outstanding for the Cherries in the last 12 months. Eddie Howe will not want to lose him. However, he’ll be well aware that bigger clubs could well swoop for his man.

But when it comes to Arsenal, we think landing Rugani over Ake would be the better move for Arteta and co.

Top-level class

Arsenal have had a number of defenders in recent years. A decent proportion of those defenders have failed to excel too, often leaving the Gunners short at the back.

The current defence is nothing to write home about either. The likes of Mustafi, Chambers, and Luiz, are all defenders who not many football fans would term as ‘world-class’.

That, then, is where the capture of Daniele Rugani would come in. Italian football has a long history of producing top-class central defenders. Rugani is a player who has continued this trend.

His experience of playing for a top-level team in Juventus is priceless, to an extent. It certainly puts him above Nathan Ake in terms of what he can bring to the fold.

No risk

In splashing the cash on Nathan Ake, Arsenal would be getting a defender yet to prove it with a huge club. Chelsea sold him, and although he’s impressed for the Cherries, the Gunners are another step up.

Rugani, on the other hand, has been playing with Juventus. This is a team that consists of some of the world’s very best players. Not to mention what he’ll have learnt from playing alongside genuinely brilliant defenders like Gio Chiellini.

It’s a no brainer really. Arsenal have to go for Daniele Rugani over Nathan Ake.
