Arsenal are set to be without David Luiz for several weeks and a replacement could be staring Mikel Arteta firmly in the face.
Prior to his own injury problems Calum Chambers was arguably in the form of his life. With the Brazilian set to be sidelined for while the former Southampton man could step into the breach.
Luiz suffered the injury during the recent defeat to Leicester and missed the games against Dundalk and Manchester United.
Gabriel has played in a back three alongside Rob Holding and Kieran Tierney in his absence and against United, it worked a treat.
Tierney isn’t a natural option at centre-back and utilising him in a more natural position might be the long-term solution.
Rob Holding is another player who has struggled for consistency too with some supporters still unconvinced over his long-term inclusion.
Chambers is versatile and prior to his injury, he was starting to get firmly into his stride in the Gunners team.
The 25-year-old has played 101 times for the Gunners since arriving from Arsenal in a deal worth £16 million.
He hasn’t always been seen as the first choice but his ability to play at centre-back and in either full-back position makes him a valuable asset.
Chambers deserves a chance to pick up where he left off in Arteta’s team and Luiz’s injury could provide an opening.
The £50,000-a-week player has far more competition for a place these days.
With games coming thick and fast, however, the man favoured by Arteta when he first arrived could be in luck.
The challenge for Arsenal is to reach the top four and qualify for the Champions League.
As a result, Arteta will need as many options available to him as possible and Chambers returning to action looks timely.
