Dejan Lovren’s future at Liverpool is becoming increasingly likely to end this summer as the Croatian giants remains fourth choice in Jurgen Klopp’s centre-back pecking order – and bringing in a wonderkid, linked with Anfield, would be a top move.
Lovren, 30, is due to enter the final 12 months of his contract in June – and has been linked with clubs all over Europe. Italian outlet La Lazio Siamo Noi have claimed that Lazio, AC Milan, Lyon, Tottenham and Arsenal are all keen on Lovren.
The former Southampton star has been involved in just 14 appearances, with the likes of Joe Gomez, Virgil van Dijk and Joel Matip all ahead of Lovren in the pecking order. His fate may have been sealed in the 3-0 defeat to watford.
With Lovren expected to leave, Liverpool need to bring in a new defender. It remains to be seen if Jurgen Klopp looks to bring in a first-choice, big-money partner for van Dijk – or whether he signs a young defender as cover for Gomez and van Dijk.
Indeed, Italian outlet Passione Inter have claimed that Liverpool are interested in signing 20-year-old Inter defender Alessandro Bastoni. The defender joined Inter for £28million (CalcioMercato) in the summer of 2017.
He has since been on loan at Atalanta and then Parma last season, where he clocked up 24 appearances in all competitions. That form has seen Antonio Conte place his faith in the Italy Under-21 cap, playing 17 times for the Nerrazzuri.
Comfort on the ball at the back, with an excellent footballing brain, Bastoni would fit right at home in Liverpool’s ball-playing, attacking style of play that sees The Reds start with possession at the back and work their way forwards.
Unlike Bastoni, Lovren is somewhat dodgy when in possession. Bringing in Bastoni, who is 10 years younger than Lovren and more suited to Liverpool’s style of play would be stunning business by Michael Edwards – especially as Lovren’s replacement.
