Aston Villa do have several options in their squad to fill the role of goalkeeper, but with Tom Heaton currently injured there is no clear number one and it’s an area that needs addressing.

Dean Smith’s side have been linked with Manchester United’s Sergio Romero this summer to try fill the net, but the Sun explains that any swoop for him could be wrecked by his wages.

The Midlands outfit could do with a new goalkeeper ahead of the fast-approaching Premier League season and they should consider Tottenham’s Paulo Gazzaniga.

According to the Evening Standard, Spurs have made Gazzaniga available to sign this summer and are prepared to listen to offers for him, with Fulham mentioned as potential suitors.

Villa should see this as an ideal opportunity to swoop in for the 28-year-old and offer him the chance of regular first-team action with them.

Despite the fact Gazzaniga has played a number two role at Spurs to teammate Hugo Lloris, he’s been quite an impressive understudy during his three years with them and has the quality to play elsewhere.

The Argentine, who earns £20,000-a-week (Spotrac), has kept 10 clean sheets in 37 appearances for the north London outfit across all competitions since joining.

His minutes in the new campaign with Spurs are likely to be limited due to Lloris and new signing Joe Hart, but Villa could give him the platform to be number one and he’s shown in glimpses he could be a really good option for them to look at.

The 28-year-old is a brilliant shot-stopper that can make reflex saves and is a physical presence in the box too, plus at his age he should be entering the peak years of his career.
