TBR View: Aston Villa fans should be furious amid talks of free transfer for Hennessey
Aston Villa fans should be furious after the club were linked with a free transfer for Wayne Hennessey.
The news comes after Tom Heaton left the club to return to Manchester United. It leaves the Midlanders looking for a new back-up ‘keeper.
The Wales international is a free agent after he left Crystal Palace following the expiration of his contract.
And, while signing someone on a free transfer is never bad business, circumstances around the move should infuriate the Villa Park faithful
Heaton was allowed to leave Aston Villa on a free
This summer has been topsy-turvy for Dean Smith. He’s already added the likes of Emiliano Buendia and Ashley Young to the squad, but it is a departure that proves the most worrying.
While Heaton’s exit became a situation out of the club’s control, it is one created by them in the first place.
The stopper is an incredibly talented player and was a stalwart for Burnley before his move to the Midlands. Smith labelled him ‘Mr Dependable’ and ‘unflappable’ following his brilliant start to life with Villa.
Hennessey was woeful for Palace amid links with Aston Villa free transfer
Meanwhile, Hennessey proved to be woeful for Palace.
The ‘keeper was displaced by Vincente Guaita midway through the 2018/2019 campaign, and never retained his place.
During that campaign, Guaita replaced the Welshman after he sustained a back injury. The Spaniard ended up conceding fewer goals and kept more clean sheets than his teammate.
While circumstances make Hennessey an appealing player for Villa, he would be an underwhelming addition. Coupled with Heaton’s exit, the Villa Park support should be furious.
