Taylor’s Wigan display should be last straw: Aston Villa must replace him

Neil Taylor struggled against Wigan Athletic.

Aston Villa had an afternoon to forget when they travelled to Wigan Athletic in the Championship on Saturday.

Out-of-sorts Wigan brushed the Villans aside with a comfortable 3-0 victory.

Dean Smith will have used his games so far to decide who to keep and who to axe for his long-term Aston Villa plans.

And one player should be shown the exit door after another torrid afternoon on the pitch. Neil Taylor struggled to cope with Wigan and Aston Villa need an upgrade.

Smith would already have had a new left-back addition high on his priority list but this now needs to be secured soon.

If Aston Villa are to stop this season transgressing into mid-table mediocrity, Smith needs to bring in new players this month.

And left-back should be his next project so that Taylor is replaced. His poor showing against Wigan should be the last straw before Aston Villa act in the transfer market.

According to The Birmingham Mail, Brentford left-back Rico Henry is on Smith’s wish list. This is hardly surprising given that Smith had him at Walsall and Brentford.

The 21-year-old is a promising young defender and an immediate improvement on Taylor.

Aston Villa need to drop the Welshman out of their starting line-up if they want to move up the league table.
