Derby County are looking to strengthen their squad this month and Chelsea youngster Tariq Uwakwe is a target (The Sun).
The midfield maestro is set to continue his development out on loan after impressing for the under-23 outfit at Stamford Bridge.
Derby recently added Wayne Rooney to their midfield engine room but more bodies are required.
Uwakwe could prove a solid addition by Phillip Cocu and he will hope for similar to success to one of last season’s Derby loan stars.
Mason Mount was signed by Frank Lampard on a season-long loan shortly after he took the Rams job. The 21-year-old played 45 games for Derby, scoring 11 goals and registering six assists.
Uwakwe is playing for a golden generation of young talent thriving under the stewardship of Andy Myers at Chelsea.
The Blues are flying high in the league with Uwakwe featuring six times for the under-23s this season.
Derby have a very young squad this season but Uwakwe’s energy alongside Rooney could give the Rams a solid midfield axis.
The hope will surely be that the 20-year-old hits the ground running, having a similar impact to that of Mount.
Uwakwe will hope to prove himself in men’s football first and foremost but Mount has dangled the carrot for any Blues youngster.
He is now an England international and earns £75,000-a-week at Stamford Bridge (Spotrac).
If Uwakwe comes in and plays anything like Mount did, Derby could be outsiders for a play-off place.
With Rooney now settled into the side and plenty of goals in the team, they could quickly make up the eight-point gap between them and the top-six.
