Tanguy Ndombele exit could leave Everton scraping for Thiago Mendes deal

Tottenham Hotspur’s reportedly incoming transfer of Tanguy Ndombele could be bad news for Everton’s interest in signing Thiago Mendes.

The Lyon midfielder looks set to become a Tottenham player this week. As reported by The Sun, Ndombele has been given a tour of Tottenham’s training ground ahead of a £60 million move this summer. Football.London suggest he will be handed a £200,000-a-week contract as Tottenham finally add to their squad.

Ndombele, of course, was once of interest to Everton. As reported by the Liverpool Echo last year the Frenchman was a midfielder who interested sporting director Marcel Brands.

Unfortunately, that was before Ndombele put himself in the minds of Champions League sides with his stunning performances for Lyon.

But now, it seems Ndombele’s move to Tottenham could impact Everton’s hopes of signing another Ligue 1 midfielder.

Lyon have identified Lille’s Thiago Mendes as the perfect replacement. As reported by RMC Sport, Lyon are ready to spend €25 million (£22.4 million) on the Brazilian this summer. He would join fellow Brazilians in manager Sylvinho and director of football Juninho Pernambucano, a major bonus in Lyon’s negotiating position.

Everton, therefore, can seemingly forget about Mendes. As reported by La Voix Du Nord in France, Everton agreed a £20 million deal to sign the Brazilian from Lille in January.

The deal was scrubbed out once Everton managed to squash PSG’s interest in Idrissa Gana Gueye.

However, Le10 Sport reported in an exclusive earlier this month that Everton had returned with fresh interest in the player.

But with Lyon lurking, it seems Everton may have now missed out on the 27-year-old.
