Celtic are reportedly closing in on the free agent signing of striker Steven Fletcher this summer after the veteran’s contract at Sheffield Wednesday expired – and Tam McManus is shocked at some supporters criticising the move.
The Daily Mail have claimed that the Scottish champions have offered 33-year-old Fletcher a one-year deal to join Celtic – 11 years on since Celtic made Hibernian an offer in 2009, only for Hibs to turn down the bid.
Fletcher is still scoring on a regular basis. Last season, he netted 13 times in 27 Championship outings for Sheffield Wednesday – however, the Owls have not kept Fletcher and he is now a free agent.
The report claims Celtic have offered Fletcher a 12-month deal – and Fletcher is ready to turn his back on an £18k-a-week, two-year deal from Stoke. Fans are unsure over a move for Fletcher, but McManus has backed a move.
TBR’s view – Bayo set to leave, Fletcher excellent replacement
Vakoun Bayo has struggled since his move to Celtic in January 2019 and the Times claim Toulouse are ready to bid £500,000 to sign him, while St. Mirren want him on loan. Bayo out, Fletcher in – and profit, is a no-brainer.
Even if Bayo remains, or goes out on loan, signing Fletcher is a must. Leigh Griffiths is struggling, Patryk Klimala scored on Sunday but still somewhat unproven. Fletcher guarantees goals, and is the ideal plan B.
