Tam McManus has claimed on Twitter that he believes Rangers should have signed Livingston target man Lyndon Dykes in January, after the Aussie striker starred against Celtic on Wednesday night – while Rangers lost to Hamilton.
Rangers’ form since the winter break has been dismal – and it has seen Steven Gerrard’s side go from level pegging to 13 points behind their Old Firm rivals in the race for the Scottish Premiership title. A 1-0 defeat at Ibrox to Hamilton summed it up.
Alfredo Morelos’ early form has dropped off, failing to score or lay on an assist in his last eight Scottish Premiership games. The signing of Flo Kamberi has helped somewhat, while Jermain Defoe continues to rediscover his form after injury.
Dykes, meanwhile, continues to shine for Livingston. The powerful striker, 23, has had a hand in 22 goals in 32 games – scoring 12 and creating 10. Ex-Hibs star McManus, a regular on BBC Sportsound, thinks Rangers should have signed Dykes in January.
TBR’s view – Would Dykes be a good signing for Rangers?
Without a doubt. Since Gerrard took over at Rangers, he has used Morelos as his first-choice striker and Defoe as back-up for almost the entirety of his time at Ibrox. Though Morelos is strong, he is not a target man.
Having a plan B in Dykes – or even a combination up front between Dykes and Morelos – would see Rangers become impossible to handle in the final third. Unlike Morelos, Dykes knows how to score against Celtic, having done so this season.
If Rangers have the chance to bring the Aussie striker to Ibrox, they should do without a moment to spare.
