TalkSPORT pundit thinks Arsenal star Aaron Ramsdale has been brilliant

Aaron Ramsdale has become one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League since joining Arsenal, but not many people expected that to happen.

The Englishman joined the Gunners for £24 million (The Athletic) from Sheffield United in last year’s summer transfer window. He has played 55 times so far and is one of Mikel Arteta’s most important players.

When rumours that Arsenal are interested in Ramsdale started floating around last year, Arteta received a lot of stick from some fans, pundits and the media.

It just didn’t make sense to people why the Gunners were pushing so hard to sign a goalkeeper who had been relegated from the Premier League in back-to-back seasons.

Arteta ignored all the noise from the outside and brought Ramsdale in. He quickly displaced Bernd Leno as the club’s number one, and he has been nothing short of magnificent since.

Pundit and Tottenham fan Darren Ambrose is really impressed with some of the business Arsenal have managed to do in recent years. One of them is bringing Ramsdale in for just £24 million.

He said on talkSPORT: “Ramsdale – what was he? £20-£25 million?

“Everyone was criticising that signing. (He’s been) absolutely brilliant.”

Arteta received a lot of stick in his first two years as Gunners boss for numerous reasons, but the one thing he has mostly been right about is transfers.

Apart from Willian and Runar Alex Runarsson, a case can be made that every other incoming at the Emirates over the last three years has worked out well – Ramsdale is definitely one of them.

The Runarsson gamble after selling Emi Martinez just didn’t work out in the 2020-21 campaign, which made a new goalkeeper a huge priority in the summer transfer window last year.

Arsenal could’ve gone with numerous other goalkeepers who were a lot more established than Ramsdale, but the Spaniard was adamant that he wanted the Sheffield United man, and that decision has proved to be a genius one.
