TalkSPORT’s Tony Cascarino has slammed Tottenham and their manager Antonio Conte for what he branded a ‘cowards’ performance in Marseille.
Spurs won out in the end as they managed to equaliser and then nick a late winner through Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.
However, the first-half performance from Spurs came in for criticism. And one of those to lay into it was Cascarino, who spoke on TalkSPORT today and make a bold claim in the direction of Conte.

“That’s the worst performance I’ve seen for Spurs in 45 minutes. It was dreadful. It shows you the fine margins of sport and football. They offered absolutely nothing. I’m saying this word now because it’s not a very nice word. I think it was a cowards performance by the coach in the first half,” Cascarino said on TalkSPORT.
“You cannot sit off teams like they do. I don’t know you can be so cowardly in setting up a team. Conte got it wrong again. They’ve got players well capable of playing a brand of football that is going to help forwards and win games.”
Cascarino is not the first pundit to claim Conte’s tactics are costing Spurs. However, the Italian will simply point to being third and through in the Champions League to silence the doubters.
Conte has impressed since taking over at Spurs on a mega-money deal said to be worth £30m He guided them to the Champions League places last term and has since been backed by Daniel Levy and the board.
TBR’s View: Cascarino words a tad harsh on Conte
He does say it’s a harsh word to use but describing the performance as cowardly is a bit OTT from the TalkSPORT man.
Sure, it wasn’t a great 45 minutes. But Conte can’t get it bang on every single time and at the end of the day, Spurs won in the end.
Conte will have to start getting used to this sort of scrutiny. In fact, he’s probably used to it already given he’s been at the top since day one. For the Italian, it will be just another comment to brush off.
