TalkSPORT pundit says Leeds man is lucky to be at Euro 2020 ahead of Premier League star
TalkSPORT pundit Jamie O’Hara has made a negative comment about Leeds United star Kalvin Phillips, claiming the decision to name him in the England squad ahead of West Ham’s Jesse Lingard is wrong.
Whites midfielder Phillips has been named in Gareth Southgate’s final 26-man England squad for Euro 2020, and it’s a great reward for his individual work this year.
Meanwhile, attacking midfielder Lingard was one of the unlucky ones cut from the 33-man group.
25-year-old Phillips is heading to his first major international tournament.
However, O’Hara has come out with a strange attack on the Leeds defensive midfielder.
“Let’s be honest, Lingard should be in front of Kalvin Phillips,” O’Hara told talkSPORT.
“They’re playing in midfield but if you’re taking four right-backs, you’re not playing all of them.
“I think you’ve got to take people who are going to make a difference. In my opinion, what does Kalvin Phillips do that Jude Bellingham, Declan Rice and Jordan Henderson can’t do?”
Leeds ace Phillips can silence O’Hara by shining for England
For the record, Phillips and Lingard play completely different positions. There has not been a point where the two are in direct competition for one spot in the England squad.
O’Hara’s attack on Phillips is unjustified.
There aren’t many players that are as crucial to their club than Phillips at Elland Road.
The Leeds-born playmaker is so effective with his neat work in front of a defence, and hasn’t looked overawed by international football so far. Additionally, he’s been in the kind of form this year that it makes perfect sense to take him.
