‘He’s the next best’: TalkSPORT pundit says Newcastle have a player who is only bettered by Tottenham superstar

TalkSPORT regular Tony Cascarino has been singing the praises of Newcastle forward Callum Wilson today.

The England and Magpies striker got his campaign off and running with the second goal in the 2-0 win over a disjointed looking Nottingham Forest side yesterday. Wilson returned towards the back end of last season to great effect and seems to have carried on his good form into the new campaign.

And with a World Cup in Qatar just months away, Cascarino said on TalkSPORT today that he feels Wilson is second only to Three Lions skipper and Spurs star, Harry Kane, when it comes to number nines.

“We talked at length about Callum Wilson yesterday. I think he’s the next best after Kane, for me, as in England strikers. He’s got across his defender, he knows exactly what he wants to do. He knows if he gets across the body of the defender he can get a flick, and it will go in the bottom or top corner. That’s Callum Wilson,” Cascarino said.

Wilson will be firmly on Gareth Southgate’s radar if he can keep scoring and playing for Newcastle. Indeed, Wilson has already got off the mark for England, so it’s nothing new for the Newcastle man to be called up.

TBR’s View: Callum Wilson Vital For Newcastle

If Newcastle can keep Wilson fit this season then there is actually a chance they can fight for Europe. He is that good, and his goals could be crucial for the Magpies.

Should Wilson get injured again, then Eddie Howe would seemingly struggle to replace him. We saw last season with Chris Wood that he doesn’t have the goal threat of Wilson, albeit he is a handful.

Cascarino praising Wilson here is bang on, and the point about being second to Harry Kane is a valid one too.
