TalkSPORT’s Jason Cundy has told Erling Haaland to go after Virgil van Dijk this weekend, insisting Ibrahima Konate is the tougher defender right now.
Van Dijk is among a cluster of Liverpool players who haven’t quite been at their best this season. However, a 7-1 win over Rangers in midweek will have given the Reds a boost ahead of what is a massive game against Manchester City this weekend.

However, Cundy, speaking on TalkSPORT last night, believes that Van Dijk is still the one defender who looks out of sorts at Anfield and believes Konate is the better of the two right now.
“If I’m Haaland I’m putting it on Van Dijk, I ain’t going near Konate. Physically I think he’s quicker, he’s stronger. I know he’s (Van Dijk) had his injury right. But right now if I’m looking at those two centre-halves, and you’re Pep, which one are you going to try and get in behind, get the benefit of? I’m going after Van Dijk,” Cundy said.
“And when was the last time you thought you’d go into the game thinking out of the two centre-halves, Van Dijk’s the one you won’t be able to deal with Haaland.”
TBR’s View: Haaland v Van Dijk A Massive Battle
Surely Van Dijk will see this as the ideal chance for him to make his mark and get back to his dominating best?
Cundy’s point about the Liverpool defensive duo is a good one. Konate probably does have the tools to deal with Haaland right now but Van Dijk has the experience as well, which could be crucial.
In a nutshell, Van Dijk needs to play well this weekend for Liverpool to even have a sniff. As it stands, City look so far ahead of their recent rivals that anything other than a City win would be a surprise.
