TalkSPORT journalist claims he cannot see £60m player signing for Chelsea now

Ivan Toney is likely to be on the move this summer.

Thomas Frank has admitted that he’s likely to sell the striker at the end of the season, and it’s fair to say he has no shortage of admirers.

Arsenal and Chelsea are said to be very keen on the striker, but, by the sounds of things, Chelsea may not go for the England international striker this summer.

Speaking on the Premier League All Access Podcast, Alex Crook has been discussing Toney’s future, and he says that he can’t see Chelsea signing Toney due to their policy of mainly signing young players with a high upside.

Chelsea may not sign Ivan Toney

Crook shared what he knows about the £60m man.

“A few months ago they were hoping to get Ivan Toney to sign a new contract and maybe prolong his stay or have a release clause in there. It doesn’t look like that will be the case now I’m told. Toney is not in any hurry at all to sign a new contract and the expectation on all sides is that he goes in the summer. I’m interested to see where he goes. He’s the wrong side of 25, and that is prohibitive for a lot of clubs now. You laugh but I don’t think he goes to Chelsea for that reason, unless they change that model, I don’t see that happening,” Crook said.

Silly policy

We can’t help but think that this policy is ridiculous, and Chelsea will be making a mistake if it stops them from signing Toney.

Let’s be real, this youth-based recruitment policy hasn’t worked at all. Almost every played Chelsea have signed in that mould over the past 18 months has been a flop, and, more than ever before, they need some tried and tested players to drag them out of their current malaise.

If Chelsea pass up on Toney because of his age, they will be making an error.
