A number of Everton fans have praised Goodison Park attacker Anthony Gordon for his maturity after he told the Toffees website of how he took it upon himself to go and see Carlo Ancelotti to ask how he can feature more for the first team.
The 19-year-old, widely regarded as one of the Everton academy’s best prospects, has finally made his first-team breakthrough following his heroics for the Toffees Under-23s over the past few years.
Gordon was never picked for a senior game by former Toffees manager Marco Silva, having to make do with the odd spot on the bench, but is now getting much more game time under Ancelotti.
He was handed his first Premier League minutes of the season in Sunday 2-0 defeat at Southampton, replacing Gylfi Sigurdsson just before the hour mark and giving a good account of himself.
Recalling his conversation with Ancelotti earlier this season, Gordon told the Everton website: “I didn’t go and bang his door down, I went and asked politely, ‘What can I do better to get in the team?’
“I always want to get better and improve as a player. I just wanted his views on that – he gave me his view and I am trying to work on that every day.
“[There was] nothing specific [Ancelotti asked from Gordon], he said I am doing very well and to keep doing what I am doing. We have a very competitive side, which I understand.
“I was a little bit [nervous going to Ancelotti], yes. It was my first time doing it. But he is such a warm man and manager.
“For me, the nerves weren’t as bad as they could have been, because he is such a nice person. He welcomed it with open arms.”
Gordon’s comments show that he has a real maturity and desire about him, and some Everton fans loved hearing his admission, praising him on social media.

Showed more in his cameo appearances than Iwobi & Bernard have shown in full games. Would love to see him & Ellis Simms being used off the bench more!

Good on him going to the manager to see what needs to be done to get back into the side. Nothing wrong with that at all.
