Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United are now actively trying to beat Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham Hotspur to the signing of Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips.

That is according to journalist Rudy Galetti, who has noted on X what Newcastle are now doing regarding Phillips.

So, what has been reported about Newcastle United, Tottenham Hotspur and Kalvin Phillips? Let’s take a look.

Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur want Kalvin Phillips

Well, according to Rudy Galetti, Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur are interested in signing Kalvin Phillips from Manchester City in the January transfer window.

The Italian journalist has noted on X that Tottenham are monitoring Phillips, but Spurs’ main priority is to bring in a new striker.

Newcastle have made Phillips “a main target”, according to Galetti, who has claimed that Eddie Howe’s are “taking the first steps to sign” the England international midfielder, described by City Director of Football, Txiki Begiristain, on the club’s official website as “a formidable talent”.

Galetti has added that if Newcastle make a suitable offer, then City could let the midfielder go.

Phillips has struggled to make an impact at City since joining the Citizens from Leeds United in the summer of 2022.

There is speculation that the 28-year-old England international midfielder himself is open to leaving City.

Liverpool have reportedly enquired about Phillips. Arsenal are looking at the former Leeds United star as a potential replacement for Thomas Partey.

Kalvin Phillips could find Newcastle United move appealing

In my view, Kalvin Phillips could find a move to Newcastle United appealing. The Magpies are aiming to finish in the top four of the Premier League table this season and are also playing in the UEFA Champions League.

Newcastle, who have been linked with Manchester United midfielder Donny van de Beek, are a big and established club in the Premier League who are going places under manager Eddie Howe and Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF).

Phillips is 28 now and is at his peak, and I believe that he would flourish at Newcastle.
