'Take Michail's spot': Callum Wilson suggests West Ham should go and sign £30m PL striker to start up-front

Callum Wilson says West Ham should sign Ivan Toney to bolster their attacking firepower in the summer transfer window.

West Ham’s striking situation has been an issue for some time now, with Michail Antonio the only established specialist option.

When Antonio’s injury issues are taken into account, that is an even worse idea, but it has worked so far this season.

Antonio has been rested in recent Premier League games to keep him fresh for the Europa League, and the Hammers face Eintracht Frankfurt in the second leg of their semi-final clash tonight.

Wilson says West Ham should sign Ivan Toney

Speaking on the BBC’s Footballer’s Football Podcast, Antonio suggested Brentford’s Toney should move, saying: “One thing we have started to realise over the last few years is that these big boys are starting to take punts on these types of players.

“The worst case scenario is that you can go to a top boy, one of these top clubs, and if you don’t do it, you can always go back to where you came from or the level you were at.

“If an opportunity arises for him it might be the right thing for him to make a move. Obviously he wants to play for England and have all these accolades, so these are the things he is going to need to focus on. He’s 25, 26 now, so these are the things he needs to focus on and achieve these things sooner rather than later.

Wilson chimed in: “Maybe we take him West Ham and take Michail’s spot, because he can’t score anyway!”

The West Ham striker responded: “I love the challenge, I love the challenge – no problem.”

West Ham were heavily linked with a move to sign Toney in the summer but David Moyes eventually passed up on the opportunity.

The likes of Eurosport and TEAMtalk claimed that Moyes was contemplating signing Toney from Brentford back in the summer for around £30 million.

Moyes and West Ham still need a new striker and Toney has since shown he can hack it at Premier League level, with 12 goals this term.

West Ham could be a Champions League club next season if they win the Europa League. If that is the case, they would need more attacking depth, and would also have bigger funds available to get it.
