Swansea City manager Steve Cooper remains hopeful of keeping Freddie Woodman at the club, The Chronicle reports.

Woodman is currently on a season-long loan from Newcastle United. However, Cooper was quizzed about Woodman’s future. Newcastle can recall him in January so Swansea might lose him.

Despite the possibility of a recall, Cooper remains calm and confident about Swansea’s chances of keeping their goalkeeper. He is benefitting from regular playing time so Newcastle might choose to leave him at The Liberty Stadium.

Cooper said (via The Chronicle): “There’s no inclination that they want him back, and we hope that stays like that. I’m pretty sure he’s of the same opinion aswell. There’s always recall options on loan players, there’s nothing out of the norm on that, particularly with goalkeepers.

“Freddie is a young player, particularly in goalkeeping terms. He’s thriving off the fact he’s playing week-in, week-out in the Championship, which he’s not had before.”

The best option for Woodman’s long-term development is to keep him out on loan at Swansea. The 22-year-old is the first choice in South Wales and he is getting valuable minutes under his belt at a good standard.

Next season, Newcastle could have Woodman competing with Martin Dubravka for the goalkeeper spot. But for now, the former England U21 stopper needs to prove himself out on loan.
