Last night saw Ashley Williams once again prove his best days are behind him. A red card for Stoke City was the culmination of a dreadful performance from the Welshman. They are the sort of performances that Wales fans have been getting used to. Many blamed him for his nation’s play-off defeat to the Republic of Ireland for the summer’s World Cup.
So Wales need a new centre-back to rely upon. It appears, that at Williams’ former club Swansea City, they have just that.
Joe Rodon has been a revelation for Swansea in the Championship this season. The Llangyfelach native spent the second half of last season on loan at Cheltenham Town and probably did not think he would be in with a chance in the Swansea first-team this season.

However, Swansea were relegated to the second tier and a litany of centre-backs left. Alfie Mawson, Kyle Bartley, Federico Fernandez and Jordi Amat all departed the Liberty Stadium and Rodon was suddenly thrust into the starting XI.
The result has been exceptional. The 20-year-old, who has been compared to John Stones in style, has excelled under the guidance of forward-thinking manager Graham Potter.
Swansea have an absolute star in the making with Rodon, as do Wales. Williams’ time is up and pretenders to the throne must now get in line. But it will be a tough task to stop the Swansea talent going on to become an integral part of Ryan Giggs’ Wales team.
