Swansea 3-0 Sunderland: Three things we learnt

Gylfi Sigurdsson is key to Swansea survival hopes

If Swansea are to pull themselves clear of relegation and secure Premier League survival come May, then Gylfi Sigurdsson will be key. The Icelandic international is the creative heartbeat of the current side and is involved in every positive, attacking piece of play that The Swans muster. He has been directly involved in eight of Swansea’s goals in their last eight fixtures and has had a hand in 47% of the club’s goals in the Premier League throughout 2016 (14 goals and 7 assists – 21 of 45). To say that the former Tottenham and Reading midfielder is a vital component of Bob Bradley’s squad would be a major understatement.

Against Sunderland, Sigurdsson showed composure under extreme pressure by confidently stepping up and firing in the opening goal from the penalty spot. A man of lesser mental strength may have buckled, but the Icelandic international converted the spot-kick as if he was practising on the training ground. Furthermore, he was central in providing Fernando Llorente with the opportunity to double the home side’s lead with a clever corner set up. Bob Bradley must be hoping that he can keep his creative midfielder star fit and firing for the remainder of the campaign.
