Jermain Defoe is human

Sunderland came into this contest having won three of their last four matches, a series of results that had helped The Black Cats to climb off the bottom of the table and provide supporters with genuine hope that they could climb to safety. However, this defeat and the unimpressive performance produced in South Wales exposed all of their faults and highlighted the deficiencies that had been been hidden away in previous weeks. David Moyes’ side appeared relatively content to sit back and play for a draw in a relatively dull opening first forty-five minutes but soon unravelled when they started to come under increased amounts of pressure in the second period.

After falling behind the visitors looked panicked and uncomfortable in defence whilst they struggled to mount any real offensive threat. Jermain Defoe may have scored eight of Sunderland’s 14 Premier League goals so far this season but he cut a frustrated and isolated figure at the Liberty Stadium as he was starved of service from his colleagues. The 34-year-old netted a hat-trick on his last appearance in South Wales, the 4-2 victory last season, but he never looked like replicating those heroics as Sunderland slumped to a defeat and back to the foot of the table.
