Cal Roberts returned to Newcastle United’s U23 team and inspired them to a 3-0 semi-final victory last night.

In the Premier League cup semi-final, Newcastle’s U23 side cruised to a comfortable victory over a strong Leeds United team.

Roberts, who has suffered frustration out on loan this season, returned to the line-up and played an instrumental role in this win.

The 22-year-old won a penalty early in the second half, which Kelland Watts converted to put the Magpies 1-0 up.

And shortly after, Newcastle doubled their lead with Roberts scoring the goal. The winger intercepted a loose pass, charged into the box and netted.

It was an impressive performance from the academy graduate but it might not be enough to save his Newcastle future.

Roberts is out of contract at the end of the season and, according to The Chronicle, he will be released. In January, Roberts joined Colchester United on loan and that was his last chance to earn a new deal but he was recalled after just three substitute cameos.

But last night’s promising display might turn some heads at Newcastle. Here are some tweets from Newcastle fans discussing Roberts’ future after a stunning U23 performance.
