Surely Celtic need Mahlon Romeo more than Rangers?

Rangers are reportedly interested in signing Millwall defender Mahlon Romeo in the summer, as Steven Gerrard continues to use down south as a scouting pool for new talent – but do Celtic need Romeo more?

Since joining Rangers, Gerrard has brought Allan McGregor, Jon Flanagan, Connor Goldson, Gareth McAuley, Steven Davis, Jamie Murphy, Jermain Defoe and Scott Arfield from teams down south.

They have been linked with a whole host of others and it seems that Romeo is the latest to be eyed. The Express has claimed Rangers are interested in signing the 23-year-old right-back.

But Celtic could do with a player of Romeo’s talent more so than Rangers. Steven Gerrard’s side are well equipped at full-back. James Tavernier is the club’s captain, while January signing Matt Polster is back-up.

Rangers also have Jon Flanagan in reserve, while Andy Halliday and Borna Barisic play on the left side of defence. Celtic, meanwhile, are certainly lacking on each side of the defence.

At right-back – Romeo’s natural position – Celtic have Mikael Lustig and Jeremy Toljan. Lustig is set to leave the club with his contract expiring, while Toljan is only on loan from Borussia Dortmund.

The Bhoys need to sign a long-term replacement for Lustig, and may even need two right-backs given that Anthony Ralston is hardly showing the kind of quality and consistency required.

Romeo would be perfect for Celtic. Still in the early stages of his career, Romeo has already clocked up 124 league and cup appearances for Millwall. He is regarded as one of the Championship’s best right-sided defenders.

Surely, then, Celtic need speed machine Romeo more than their Old Firm rivals.
