Supersub Sturridge can be the ideal backup for England as well as Liverpool

It is no secret that Liverpool’s attacking depth was a source of frustration at times last season.

Jurgen Klopp’s primary attacking approach was, and continues to be, successful, but beyond that, he had little to call upon.

Never was that more evident than in last season’s Champions League final. Mo Salah was forced off by injury and Klopp’s backup options were half-fit duo Adam Lallana and Danny Ings.

Daniel Sturridge’s stunning goal at Chelsea on Saturday was doubly significant, for that reason. Not only was it a game Liverpool would have lost last season – they were defeated 1-0 in May – it showed the impact the former Blues hitman can have this time around.

Sturridge, along with Xherdan Shaqiri, who set up the goal, now offer the Reds a level of depth that wasn’t there last season.

As the next international break looms, another opportunity could come Sturridge’s way. England are yet another team coming off the back of an exciting, but ultimately trophyless campaign, with their lack of options bemoaned.

Gareth Southgate’s current striking alternatives are Danny Welbeck and Troy Deeney; Sturridge is a cut above both men.

He is learning to embrace his supersub role at Anfield and with captain Harry Kane undisputed first-choice for England, he will have to do the same there.

If he does, England could have a real weapon on their hands.
