Tony Dorigo has claimed in his column on The Yorkshire Post that summer signing Dan James has the ability to scare opposition defenders – just like Raphinha.

Marcelo Bielsa was keen to sign James for quite a while. He almost signed for the Whites from Swansea at one point, but that move dramatically collapsed, and he ended up joining Manchester United instead.

Leeds finally ended up getting their man this summer. James moved to Elland Road for £25 million (BBC) and the Welshman has already impressed fans and pundits alike.

Dorigo was particularly impressed by James’ performance against Watford this weekend. He hailed his speed, acceleration and character, and claimed that he, like Raphinha, can terrify defenders on the break.

Tony Dorigo: Dan James and Raphinha scare opposition defenders

He wrote in his column: “In Raphinha’s case, having him on one side scaring a full-back is terrific but now we have Daniel James scaring the life out of the other one.

“What you’re seeing from James now is why we spent £25m and why Bielsa was so keen on getting him in. His acceleration is superb.

“I think it’s a given that he’s got the right character, otherwise he wouldn’t have come. He knows what he has to do, works extremely hard for the team going forward and defending. With the ball against Watford, he was getting better and better.”

Dan James stats vs Watford

Although James got better as the game progressed, his numbers against Watford were far from his best.

The former Manchester United winger had 36 touches of the ball but maintained just 60 per cent passing accuracy. None of his five crosses were accurate and he lost possession a staggering 19 times. (SofaScore)

It wasn’t the greatest of days for James, but the most important thing for Leeds was the win. It’s now time for the Whites to kick on and reach the heights they did in the league last season.
