Kevin Campbell spoke on The Highbury Squad YouTube channel yesterday and claimed that Arsenal should target Manchester United midfielder Donny van de Beek.
The Dutchman has had a torrid time at Old Trafford. United forked out £35 million for him (BBC), but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer just doesn’t want him there. He has only played a little over 1600 minutes since the start of last season, which is just baffling.
Even some Manchester United fans can’t understand how he can’t get into the team. He has the quality to make a real difference, but Solskjaer, clearly, just doesn’t agree. That has left the midfielder in a very difficult position.
The January transfer window could open the door for a move away and Campbell would love him at Arsenal.
Campbell: Van de Beek would be brilliant at Arsenal
Asked about which midfielder Arsenal should look to sign in January, Campbell said: “There’s been a rumour about van de Beek at Manchester United. It’s (not playing under Solskjaer) not his fault, how is it his fault?
“He was at Ajax, he was unbelievable at Ajax. Gets signed by Manchester United and they won’t play him. I don’t know, I’m just saying it’s a rumour. I only want what’s best for Arsenal and I believe that van de Beek can play if given the opportunity. The boy can play.
“He wants out. You never know, maybe they (Manchester United) might (loan him to Arsenal). At the end of the day, what’s the point of having an unhappy player and obviously, Ole doesn’t fancy him.
“I think this young man has got super ability, has got a great attitude, but he needs to play. He can play anywhere around that midfield, he can play holding, eight and attacking. So again, we’ve got someone who’s versatile.”

TBR View:
Arsenal are short of options in the middle of the park. Granit Xhaka is injured and nobody knows if he’ll be back to his best after he recovers from his three-month layoff. Thomas Partey has had his fitness problems as well, which is a concern.
Albert Sambi Lokonga has been brilliant and he’s one for the future, while Mohamed Elneny and Ainsley Maitland-Niles have both been linked with moves away from the Emirates.
A new midfielder would really boost Arsenal’s squad and van de Beek would be fantastic. He’s still only 24, has done fairly well when given a chance and under the right manager, the Dutchman could become a real star.
If Arsenal really need a versatile midfielder, van de Beek would be a great addition, but it’s unlikely that Manchester United will sell him to a direct rival.
