In the summer, Sunderland were in the market for a new midfielder. One name that immediately came to the fore was that of Reading midfielder George Evans. Sunderland were seemingly on the brink of signing the player. As reported by the Chronicle, Sunderland had agreed a £1 million fee with the Berkshire club to sign the player in the summer.

Then, at the 11th hour, He decided to change his mind. He decided to join Derby County instead and Sunderland moved on to other targets.

But have Sunderland missed out? Certainly not in the short-term.

The Black Cats needed Evans to be immediately available. That has not been the case at Pride Park. Evans made his debut in August but was then out of action until December. He was struggling with knee and hip problems.

Now he is back in the Derby fold but Sunderland have muddled through without him so far. The arrivals of Dylan McGeouch, Luke O’Nien and Max Power helped to compensate whilst Grant Leadbitter is set to arrive this month.

Sunderland have not missed out on this summer target.
