Sunderland have confirmed their retained and released list on the club’s official website. Jack Ross has made his decisions on who stays and who goes with four senior players and three youngsters released.
A number of players were out of contract this summer, including Elliot Embleton. But Embleton was not included in the names of players released.
Instead, Embleton’s name popped up under the category of: “Players aged under 24 as of 30 June 2019 who have been retained or have a contract offer pending”.
There has been no official confirmation that the England U20 international has signed a new contract. His current deal is due to expire at the end of this month.
This means that Sunderland have offered him a new contract and are awaiting his response. Embleton spent last season on loan at League Two side Grimsby Town, racking up 30 games, four goals and four assists to aid his development.
But now he could play a bigger role at Sunderland. Ross rates him enough to offer him a new deal and he could get his chance to shine in pre-season.
Sunderland need to do their utmost to keep promising young midfielder Embleton. He returns to The Stadium of Light with more experience under his belt.
The 20-year-old’s next task will be to break into the Sunderland first-team, provided he signs a new deal. Embleton has the ability to play a part in next season’s promotion push after impressing in League Two.
