Sunderland’s new signing Lee Burge had a calamitous afternoon at the Stadium of Light recently

On Wednesday afternoon, Sunderland announced their second signing of the summer transfer window. Lee Burge joined Sunderland on a free transfer, the club’s official website confirmed.

Burge is a goalkeeper who joins on a free transfer after leaving Coventry City. He came through the ranks at Coventry but has decided to challenge himself elsewhere.

Upon joining, Burge told safc.com: “This is a club that can offer me everything I want, and the stature of the club is incredible. As a player, you want to train at the best facilities and play in the best stadiums, and this is by far the best place I have experienced. I just can’t wait to get going.”

The 26-year-old references his experience at The Stadium of Light as one of the factors behind his decision to join. But his visit to Sunderland last season was disastrous from an individual perspective.

Coventry beat Sunderland 5-4 in a dramatic game which dented the Black Cats’ automatic promotion bid. And Burge was between the sticks as the Sky Blues conceded four.

In particular, he was at fault for one of the goals. Burge made a mess of a cross, flapping it into the path of Charlie Wyke, who scored to make it 3-2 just before half-time.

This was characteristic of Burge’s entire season. While he remains a decent shot stopper, he needs a lot of work on his handling and command of his box.
