Sunderland kept on the coattails of Barnsley and Luton with a topsy-turvy 4-2 win over Gillingham at the Stadium of Light last night.
The Black Cats twice surrendered the lead in the first half – going in at the break level at 2-2 – but stormed through in the second half to secure a victory that keeps them within striking distance of the automatic promotion spots.
Lee Cattermole’s first ever goal at the Stadium of Light – staggering because he joined in 2009 – set the tone for an enjoyable evening but there were impressive performances elsewhere too.
Luke O’Nien is playing out of position at right-back and put in an impressive display going forward – earning him the plaudits of the watching supporters.

Sunderland’s defensive work can be sloppy at times but on a night where they scored more freely than they have done for a while to snap out of a bad habit of drawing matches, O’Nien was a useful weapon.
And the fans responded well to his attacking intent and quality on the ball on a night where they got a much-needed win on the board…
