Sunderland booked their place in the League One play-off final last night with a 0-0 draw at Fratton Park against Portsmouth.
Carrying a 1-0 win into the match from the first leg, via a Chris Maguire volley, Sunderland set them up in a more conservative 4-3-3 system, which effectively helped stifle Pompey.
The hosts made two or three headed chances across the night, but did not manage to get any concerted pressure on the Black Cats goal – and that’s because of their organisation and discipline.
Keeping a clean sheet in both legs of a play-off semi-final is an exceptional achievement and provided the bedrock of Sunderland’s success.

A key part of that success was former Everton defender Bryan Oviedo, who was outstanding at left-back, especially last night, and made an exceptional clearing header midway through the second half.
The Sunderland fans absolutely love him and took to Twitter to hail him after Jack Ross’s side booked their place at Wembley for a second time this season.
We’ve put together the best of the reaction from the Black Cats faithful as they prepare to descend on Trafalgar Squad once more…
