Sunderland supporters and Stephen Elliott react as Rangers agree goalkeeper signing

Rangers have confirmed their fourth summer signing in the form of goalkeeper Jon McLaughlin from Sunderland after the experienced stopper’s contract expired – but Stephen Elliott and Sunderland fans are not impressed.

McLaughlin, 32, joined Sunderland in the summer of 2018 from Hearts and has since clocked up an impressive 90 appearances in all competitions – remaining first choice at the Stadium of Light for two years.

A two-time Scotland international, McLaughlin was a fan favourite at Sunderland after conceding just 87 goals in those 90 games – keeping 27 clean sheets. But Sunderland failed to extend his contract.

Indeed, Rangers have swooped. Steven Gerrard has raided the League One side for the goalkeeper, landing the former Bradford City and Burton Albion goalkeeper on a two-year deal.

Allan McGregor remains first choice at Ibrox but following the exit of Wes Foderingham, it is expected that McLaughlin will step in as the Gers’ number two. With McGregor now 38, he could be a future number one.

Sunderland supporters are not happy on Twitter with owner Stewart Donald’s inability to keep McLaughlin at Sunderland despite a prior desire to remain with the club – while Sunderland icon Elliott also complained.
