Ex-Sunderland man posts congratulatory tweet after play-off progression

Stephen Elliott was delighted with the Black Cats in last night’s win over Portsmouth.

Sunderland booked their place in the League One play-off final last night following a 0-0 draw against Portsmouth.

It was the fifth time the two sides have locked horns this season and it was the Black Cats who emerged the happier from the goalless spectacle.

It would be an incredible achievement for the Scottish boss if he can lead Sunderland back at the first attempt. Confidence and morale were low when he arrived and the transformation has been magnificent.

Former player Stephen Elliott has been cheering the Black Cats on all season and he took to Twitter again following last night’s result.

He wasn’t impressed with the game in terms of quality, but couldn’t hide his delight at the outcome:

Elliott was a hardworking centre forward and in 88 appearances he scored 23 times for Sunderland.

He also heaped praise on the player he thought was most impressive last night. Turkish defender Alim Ozturk was sent-off against Pompey on Saturday but had the dismissal rescinded. Eliott praised the big centre-half as ‘important’.

Sunderland will head to Wembley for the second time this season in a couple of weeks, having taken part in the Checkatrade Trophy final earlier in the campaign.

They lost on penalties to Portsmouth that day and will hope to avoid a repeat in the play-off final.

Elliott clearly still holds a flame for Sunderland and he will surely be desperate to see Ross take the Black Cats back into the second tier.
