Sunderland should have used Neil Lennon comments as warning over Dylan McGeouch

Sunderland midfielder Dylan McGeouch has admitted he may have to consider leaving the club this summer.

Speaking to the Scottish Sun this week he suggested he has not played enough this season and may have to make a tough decision over his Black Cats future.

“I have a big decision to make. It’s disappointing I haven’t played as much as I’d have liked…

“I’ll see where my future is at and take it from there. It’s been a stop-start campaign, but I’ve been available for the majority of games. I’ve only played a handful.”

McGeouch has certainly been unfortunate with injuries this season. Whilst they have not been big issues, they have been niggling troubles which have seen him struggle to make a consistent impact at the Stadium of Light.

It seems that Sunderland should have listened to words from McGeouch’s former boss last summer as something of a warning.

Neil Lennon was his Hibernian boss at the time and told the Scottish Sun of how niggling injuries have always held the Scotland midfielder back.

“The problem with McGeouch is he has had injuries, groin strains, hamstrings and niggles, to the point where I’m not sure he played eight games in a row throughout his whole career until this season.”

Sunderland also signed plenty of midfield competition for McGeouch, but this was largely due to concerns over the ability to rely on the 26-year-old to stay fit.

In hindsight, it seems Sunderland might have made a mistake signing a player with a history of persistent injury trouble.

If a suitable replacement can be found this summer, not many at Sunderland will lose a night’s sleep over McGeouch’s potential exit.
