Sunderland must offload Bryan Oviedo as £40k-a-week is poor value for inconsistency

In the summer, it appeared very likely that Costa Rica international Bryan Oviedo would be leaving Sunderland.

Considering his international reputation playing in League One appeared below his standard. On top of that, his wages were an issue. As reported by the Sunderland Echo, the left-back is on a wage in the region of £40,000-a-week – a massive amount for a team at this level.

However, the Black Cats could not get him off the bill with interest from Belgium eventually coming to nothing.

Oviedo, to his credit, got his head down and stuck back into work at Sunderland. However, after impressing early on, his form has dipped recently.

Reece James is the preferred option at left-back, with Oviedo now playing most of his football in midfield when he does feature.

Simply put, he is not lighting up the league like some may have felt he could. At £40,000-a-week, he should be making League One look like a cakewalk. His form has not been atrocious, but right now it is hard to see how losing Oviedo would come at a detriment to Sunderland’s promotion push.

In January, Sunderland must ensure that they manage to get a deal done for the player to leave. That £40,000-a-week could be spent so much better elsewhere.
